It was made, then forgotten, stored deep underground in a basement in Manhattan,
then retrieved from oblivion by the merest coincidence and turned out
to have become more relevant, more insightful than at the time of its origins.
In its presentation here, the unachieved and evolving character of the book has been preserved and respected.
This makes for an inspiring mixture of easy-flowing narrative
alternating with raw footage, sketches and stand-alone images, all contributing to the overall effect.
This is a unique and highly original work.

When the body of a middle-aged Black man is found in an abandoned building on Tompkins Square, the police conveniently rule it a junkie suicide.
But a young cop following his instincts smells a different story.
Teaming up with his freewheeling girlfriend, they venture into the underground culture of downtown Manhattan to discover a web of intrigues all related to widespread corruption.
Their findings come to a head when anarchist downtown faces police repression during the infamous Tompkins Square Riots.

Tompkins Square, nu ook beschikbaar in nederlandstalige versie, is een detective-novella opgebouwd rond de sfeer in downtown New York in de ruige jaren 1980.
De stad was toen nauwelijks uit de grote financiële crisis van de jaren 1970 geraakt, maar werd geplaagd door dakloosheid, de epidemies van crack en AIDS, en stuurloze politiek.
Als het lichaam van een Zwarte man van middelbare leeftijd gevonden wordt in een verlaten pand bij het Tompkins Square park, doet de politie het snel en gemakkelijk af als een junkie-zelfmoord.
Maar een jonge Afro-Amerikaanse politieagent en zijn eigenzinnige liefje geloven die versie niet, en dringen door in het anarchistische milieu van alternatief New York om de ware toedracht te ontcijferen.
Een levendig portret van de stad en haar meer kleurrijke bewonners in moeilijke maar ook inspirerende tijden, met liefde geschreven door een auteur die er lange jaren woonde en ronddoolde.
